Betting preparation before the next racing programme

Unplayed January horse-racing offerings, including both Wellington programmes and Ellerslie’s Summer Steeplechase, are deferred for February review while ASN prepares racing betting. Their historical dates remain in the archive. Completed races and records stay intact.

The ASN Grand Circuit retains its provisional February 2 opening target, subject to betting tests and race preparation. Later historical fixtures keep their own dates. No exact replay dates have been assigned to the deferred January meetings.

The opening chapter · Official ASN replays

Two venues. Two opening winners.

Jabber puts Ellerslie into the Universal record. Frank McConnell records the opening New Orleans victory. The results now have a home with their stories, historical setting and first recorded ASN honours.

Ellerslie · January 2 flat card complete

7 races · 57 starts

Seven official replays complete the supported flat-race card. Each race counts once; this meeting summary adds no extra event. All 57 starters finish.

Summer/Auckland Steeplechase: On-hold for game creation or purchase. The current racing game has no fence or jumping mechanics. That race remains unplayed and contributes no result.

Opening winners & recorded races
Ellerslie · Glasgow Handicap

Jabber opens Ellerslie’s ASN winner’s book.

Jabber heads a twelve-horse finish in the Glasgow Handicap, giving Ellerslie its first recorded ASN winner. Davis is the rider label retained in the source record. Firefly finishes second and Lillie third, with Brilliant and La Gloria completing the first five.

The seven-furlong race becomes the opening Ellerslie entry in the Universal archive. The placing is permanent within this adopted replay; horse identities remain event scoped while historical identity work continues. The record supplies an order of finish, not a measured winning margin.

New Orleans · Race 1 · Selling

Frank McConnell writes the opening New Orleans entry.

Frank McConnell wins the first recorded ASN race at New Orleans. School Girl takes second and Chicopee third in the five-horse field; Miss Dooley and Manlius complete the finish. The winner’s reported rider is retained as L. Th’mps’n, without expanding an unresolved name.

The sourced contest is a $250 selling race for horses aged four and upward over one mile and seventy yards. That gives this opening entry a precise historical setting. ASN’s finish is its own result: no elapsed time, winning margin or unsupported late-race move has been invented.

The world behind the races

Historical context
Historical setting

Ellerslie’s New Year meeting

Period reporting places the Glasgow Handicap on the January 1 day of the Auckland meeting. Notes by Monitor described Jabber as a strong favourite on earlier running. That contemporary expectation belongs to the historical background; it is not evidence of what happened during the ASN replay.

New Zealand Graphic, January 6, 1900 · Source evidence; separate from ASN replay results.

Historical setting

The New Orleans race card

The Daily Racing Form chart dated January 2 documents the previous day’s New Orleans opener: a five-horse selling race over one mile and seventy yards. The archived source describes cloudy weather and a heavy historical track. Those source conditions and ASN’s Estimated replay setup are recorded separately.

ASN milestones

Venue firsts apply to the accepted opening ASN ledger, beginning January 1, 1900. They are not the first winners in racecourse history. No overall first winner is assigned without a verified replay sequence. Horse identities remain event scoped; no name-only career merging.

Limber’s price and Gunbearer’s rider remain provisional. This is the official ASN replay outcome; the original historical finish did not determine ratings. Ormuz’s earlier pilot stays TEST.
