The historical race

The New Zealand Herald reports a flat-bottom boat race for Waiheke settlers in Waiheke boats, with two oars and a steersman. Its historical order was Gray Brothers, G. Pegler and C. Bassett [provisional], then H. and G. Day. Those newspaper placings are separate from the ASN replay above.

The course followed the Māori dinghy race: from the flagboat at the south end of the beach, round and inside two buoys at the north end, then back inside the starting flagboat. Exact geometry, measured distance and elapsed time are unavailable. The three named placed crews form the reconstructed field; the complete starter count is unknown.

Reconstruction and recording

Equal estimated C-20-D ratings were frozen before the official run. The 40-turn adaptation expresses progress as a percentage, with empty D6 lanes ignored and duplicate selectors moving once. Boat type, steering and turns are abstracted without additional performance modifiers. Steersmen are unnamed. Gray Brothers are not assigned invented given names or linked to D. Gray; C. Bassett remains a provisional reading.

Five selected Waiheke rowing races are now complete. The wider regatta programme remains open. TEST pilots are excluded from official results and counters.
