Momentum is a fine thing. Keeping it is harder.

Kid McCoy helped open ASN’s boxing year by stopping Peter Maher in the eighth round on January 1. His recorded ASN account stands at one bout, one victory and one knockout. That finish also earned him ASN’s inaugural Historic Player of the Week honour. Friday offers the chance to make it two wins—and an opponent who gives that ambition some teeth.

Joe Choynski arrives without an ASN replay on his ledger, but with a substantial reputation from the real ring. The San Francisco veteran had already shared a ring with Jim Corbett, and his 20-round draw with Jim Jeffries in 1897 demonstrated how awkward an assignment he could be for a bigger man. His punching power demands respect before the first exchange.

A thinking man’s fight—with consequences

McCoy brings a reputation for fast hands, elusive footwork and deception. The famous corkscrew punch is part of his calling card, but the more interesting question is how he creates the opening: a feint, a change of angle, a left hand that makes the other fellow commit.

Choynski brings the danger of a respected hitter with experience against formidable opposition. ASN’s matchup question is whether he can make McCoy pay for coming close enough to do his clever work. A cautious opening could become a very different fight after one clean connection.

ASN ringside assessment, based on the fighters’ historical reputations; these are tactical questions for the replay.

There is history between these two

Their real-world rivalry predates ASN’s January 1 starting line. The record lists a 20-round points victory for McCoy in San Francisco on March 24, 1899, followed by a six-round draw in Chicago on October 6. Friday’s meeting adds a longer scheduled distance to a pairing that already has unfinished business.

Those earlier meetings belong to historical background. ASN’s replay record begins in 1900, with McCoy’s win over Maher; Choynski starts his own ASN account here.

Three things to watch at ringside

Who sets the terms?

Can McCoy make the opening rounds a contest of timing and movement? Or can Choynski force exchanges before the Kid settles into his rhythm?

What does one punch change?

Watch what happens after the first hard connection. Does the recipient recover his composure, change his approach, or find himself drawn into a fight he did not intend?

How long can they keep it up?

A 25-round assignment asks more than a brisk start. If they reach the later rounds, the premium shifts toward stamina, patience and the ability to keep making sound decisions under punishment.
