Jack Root earned a unanimous decision over Tommy West after six rounds at Tattersall’s Pavilion. The three judges favoured Root, 59–55, 60–54 and 58–56.
The opening two rounds divided the judges. West took the first by a two-to-one vote. Root answered by the same margin in the second, though one judge still had West ahead at that point.
Root then won the third, fourth, fifth and sixth on every card. That closing sequence brought all three judges to his side and secured the unanimous result. Root won five of the six rounds by the judges’ majority; West won one.
Every recorded round was scored 10–9. No stoppage ended the contest, and all six rounds appear in the final scorecards.

ASN calculated full-career fighter cards with the creator supplied by John Turnbull of Powder Blue Sports. The scoring arrangements were reconstructed within the creator’s target tolerance. These two cards were not separately rated or approved by John, and no claim is made that they represent each boxer’s form specifically in January 1900. Historical career records do not enter ASN replay totals.
BoxRec bout 97276 lists six rounds and a middleweight fixture category. The career summaries list light-heavyweight; this replay uses the January 9 bout category without asserting a championship or independently verified contracted weight. Indexed contemporary reports in the January 10 Indianapolis Journal, page 1, and St. Paul Pioneer Press, page 6, describe a January 9 Chicago decision after six rounds. The original page images were not inspected.
All six recorded rounds were checked against the owner’s accepted KEEPER export. The historical result was not scripted into the replay. Punch totals and knockdown counts are unavailable.
Five accepted bouts now appear in the Boxing archive. Root–West retains its January 9 date and a distinct fight-card ID; the earlier Dixon–McGovern January 9 result and all prior IDs are preserved. The Universe clock remains January 10, 1900.
